‘Much of my own exploration of the landscape falls into the realm of the human presence in the world it encounters through perception and what is left behind, memory /movement.

Each time we return to a memory we re-live it differently each time,  the veil paintings serve as a symbol of the layers of different memories created  of a place that I inhabited.’

Amber Hearn
Bio

Amber Hearn is currently based in the Blue Mountains, Australia. Growing up in regional New South Wales and Papua New Guinea, Amber’s nomadic childhood has shaped her relationship with notions of home, memories, land and place. Amber’s artistic practice mainly engages the field of painting, yet broadly embraces installation, performance video and virtual reality.

Amber’s work explores human experience and connection/lack of connection with the landscape. Presenting worlds which are void of the human, yet hold a trace of where the body may have been through their movement and vibrance. She uses a combination of free, bold brush markings and constrained forms to create environments which embody being human and how we experience the landscape/what we leave behind. Amber often draws upon her experience growing up in the bush and utilises memories she has gathered throughout her childhood.

“Some of my earliest memories are of the landscape. We moved around a lot and lived in Papua New Guinea for my primary years where I was home schooled by my mother, before moving to regional NSW. My dad flies small aircraft, I was flying with him regularly and I draw upon memories of the landscape from this topographical view, being close to the ground, it starts to look like an interesting collection of sectioned-off planes of colour. This perspective of the landscape has sat with me throughout the development of my art practice. My process reflects on this exposure to nature and the landscape from such varying angles. This has informed how I approach my painting process and composition in general. I often section off and simplify shapes and forms, with a combination of perspective which is both macro and micro. My work is an exploration of these ideas within the sphere of the landscape. The landscape will always fascinate and comfort me, it speaks its familiar language yet always has something new to say.”

"Most recently, I’m working directly with ideas surrounding water, flooding, mountains and my immersion within the landscape around my home in the Blue mountains, I am responding to the last few years of environmental impact of the floods and heavy rainfall that has taken place, as well as the many ups and downs within my internal sphere. ‘Rain mountains/ Rain scapes' have been emerging, with the rain holding itself as a veil/shield that also works as a visual framing system for the built up dreamy/memory based, mountainous ranges."

Amber graduated from The National Art School in 2014 with a Bachelor of Fine Art (Honours). Amber is a recent finalist in the Paddington Art Prize, Glover Art PrizeFishers Ghost Art Award and Blacktown City Art Prize.
