Claire Nakazawa
Bio

Claire is interested in exploring the ability of our natural instincts to present and provide an alternative way of living and experiencing life. Her largely pre-thought process of painting creates work that challenges a ‘thought ruled world’.

Visually her works represent colourful, abstract landscapes and dreamscapes inspired by nature and urban environment.

Working freely and intuitively in acrylic on large scale canvas or board, stylistically Claire enjoys the juxtaposition between controlled and precise mark making and a looser, dynamic approach.

Claire grew up in the Blue Mountains before moving to Sydney to study painting at the New South Wales, College of Fine Art in 2003. Since completing her degree in 2007 she continues to challenge and develop her practice, painting for solo and group exhibitions, murals and through a multimedia and performance practice.

Claire has exhibited around Australia in a variety of successful shows, including her sold out debut show in 2009, another in 2012 and most recently at Day Fine Art Gallery, along with group shows in Sydney Melbourne and Brisbane. She has received several grants, residencies and awards such as the Australian Council for the Arts Arts Start Grant, Leichhardt City Council Mural Art Award, The Blue Mountains Street Art Mayors Award and the Fraser Studios residency program.

Claire is also a performer under the alias Chaos Emerald. She featured on the single ‘Speak of the Devil’ by Hermitude which has lead her to performing nationally and internationally at festivals such as Woodford Folk Festival, Park Life, Pyramid Rock Festival, Splore Festival New Zealand, Groove in the Moo, Fusion Festival Berlin, CMJ New York, Lightning in a Bottle LA, Wakarusa Arkansas USA, Governors Ball NYC, The AIR Awards and many more. Claire is currently performing as a vocalist and dancer in Urthboys live show and is working on a new project, Haiku Hands.
