SOLACE June 2026

As an artist, I’m primarily interested in celebrating the beauty of Australian native flowers. Exploring how colour and light can capture a fleeting, precious moment.

Solace became the natural title for this series of still life paintings — after a very challenging year of loss and adversity, I found the practice of creating my art provided comfort and resolve.

I consider each work a quiet floral portrait, free from over styling or background noise. Working on the organic surface of birch ply, I layer mixed media — inks, pastels and pencils — to convey both the vulnerability and resilience found within each bloom.

The humble glass bottles, jars and jugs featured throughout the series are chosen as understated, utilitarian companions to the florals. They transform into jewel-like forms when illuminated, catching and refracting sunlight in unexpected ways. Through layers, of colour and texture, I’ve tried to translate this little bit of magic, and allow the paintings to sing.

Before beginning each artwork, I forage for flowers, carefully compose arrangements, catalogue photographs and refine my colour palette. While my process is thoughtfully curated, the narrative I hope to evoke is one of accessibility and nostalgia — picture the simple pleasure of gathering native flowers, placing them randomly into a vintage bottle to be placed on a sunlit kitchen table.

These are the gentle moments I hope to preserve through my work — moments that can live on in homes, conversations and memories, offering a sense of joy, connection and even solace.

BIO
Fiona Lenord

Blue Mountain's based artist Fiona grew up in the Hawkesbury on a stone fruit and strawberry orchard, later moving to Sydney to study and work as a textile designer, creating  florals for well-known fashion and bedlinen brands.

This background has both inspired and informed her new creative practice. Preferring the organic nature of the birch, plywood panels, Fiona uses layers of mixed media to play with colour and light, in an attempt to evoke joy in the viewer.
