John ‘Hall’ Thorpe (1874-1947)
Wood-engraver and painter of landscapes and flowers. Born in Victoria, Australia, worked on the Sydney Mail while studying with the Sydney Art Society, 1886-1901; was a founder member of the South Wales Society of Artists. Moved to London in 1902 and attended Heatherley's and St Martin's School of Art. Exhibited with the Royal Society of British Artists (of which he was elected member, 1912), Royal Academy and the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
A solo exhibition of his colour wood cuts were shown at Heals, London, 1918. A member of the Art Workers' Guild, 1922-7 and of the Langham Sketch Club. He married the artist Kathleen Hall Thorpe.
His work is held by the V&A Museum; Art Gallery New South Wales, Sydney; National Gallery of Art, Canberra and Ballarat Fine Art Gallery, Victoria.
