This image of fires and rising oceans from the North East is not a contemporary response – its source is millennia old – the end of the last Ice Age. It came to me (close to its current form) while I was researching in preparation for a trip to Tasmania that eventually had to be Covid-cancelled.
The immense fluctuations in sea level over geological time have always fascinated me – the drowning of land bridges is comparatively recent history and deeply effects our mythology and all evolution.
Under these straits lie fireplaces and campsites and middens and hunting grounds and songlines and paintings and carvings and burial grounds as well as the once fire red rocks of the North East.
One of Australia’s most innovative realist landscape painters. Blue Mountains based Taylor finds his inspiration from the natural beauty of the land. His understanding of, and connection with nature is evident when viewing Taylor’s compelling and thoughtful compositions.
Neil Taylor Biography
Neil Taylor was born in Brisbane in 1953 and studied painting in the early 70’s with William Robinson. After a short period of teaching he moved to the Sydney area and began to paint and exhibit full-time. He spent almost thirty years based around the Hawkesbury River north of Sydney and painting the local wilderness areas. He now lives west of Sydney and travels extensively both in Australia and overseas researching new subjects. He is particularly well known for his treatment of ocean and littoral themes.
Taylor has held almost 40 one-man shows in Australia, Asia, U.S.A. and the UK. He is represented in State collections as well as in a long list of major public and private corporations and private collections.
