Since the time of European settlement in Australia, the ongoing cost of introduced species on native flora and fauna has been immense. It is a concerning issue that has seen the likes of rabbits, foxes, cane toads, camels, feral cats, dogs, and pigs, lantana, blackberry, willow, mustard weed, and so the list goes on, outcompeting and dominating native species. Their negative influence has pushed many native ecosystems to the point of utter collapse, with some native species close to the point of or having already succumbed to the pressure and becoming extinct. Precious, our native ecosystems are fragile. To alter just one thread of their intricate weave is to unravel the entire structure, and once it is gone there is no way to bring it back. The damage is permanent.

Again, I find I reach my usual conclusion. As always though, I wonder how much will really change. For it is action that is needed, but to truly make progress in preventing further degradation, action must be swift and resolute. We, the people, must want unanimously, to make the change, and maybe then our governments may take notice, and too work towards a more environmentally sustainable tomorrow. The likelihood of that occurring though is nil, and so what hope truly is there. Some may call me negative and I in turn question how anyone can continue to remain so positive in light of what we face. Our natural world is at breaking point and we need not look far nor wide to see it. Look as another species vanishes. See how the eucalypts hiss, moan, and crackle as a wildfire sweeps through the Australian bush and envelops all in its hellish heat and glow. And then, when the rain finally comes, it’s unrelenting. Now watch as a torrent of water surges, swallowing all in its path. It does not discriminate. Bush, pastures, animals, humans, towns, and cities, all swept away in it’s fury. This is not natural but is the new way of things. Now I may be negative but at least I am no fool.
