The resounding laugh of a kookaburra that reverberates throughout the bush is a typical sound of Australia, and one that many stop to listen to with much fondness. This majestic bird along with kangaroos, koalas, platypus, and wallabies are distinct icons that represent this ancient land. Although the Kookaburra’s population is stable and of least concern, other Australian animals like the Koala are critically endangered and are on the point of no return. It is frustrating when one considers that these animals were once as common as the Kookaburra and yet now are fighting for their very survival. Loss of Habitat due to land clearing for development, fatalities from vehicles on our roads and highways, and the effects of climate change that lead to drought and wildfire see an increase in the of loss of population and make survival of these very animals uncertain. Would it not be wise to act before the fact? If history teaches us one thing, it is to learn from our mistakes and find solutions to prevent past disasters from reoccurring in the future. In the case of our natural world, we know the triggers that eventuate in its demise and destruction, yet it is clear that humanity chooses to live in apathy and denial. One reaps what one sows.
