Essential, water is the giver and preserver of all life. Without it, the planet and all its inhabitants would perish. One only needs to look to times of drought, where crops and livestock fail and native plants and animals suffer and die, to know just how vital water is to life. Recently, mismanagement of water led to environmental catastrophe in the Darling River. Over irrigation allowed areas of the river to completely dry and reduced water flow failed to flush out nutrients from farm runoff, triggering toxic algal blooms that killed thousands of native fish. The Adani Carmichael coal mine water management plan has been approved yet scientists tell of an ecological disaster in the making. The proposed mine has been given leave to yearly drain billions of litres of groundwater. This exploit will threaten ancient springs and the fragile pristine ecosystems that rely on its water for their success and survival. Drought stricken Queensland can ill afford to squander a single drop. Australia is by nature a dry continent. A rise in population continues to place pressure upon water resources and irresponsible farming such that of cotton necessitates huge quantities of water to thrive, further exacerbating the issue.
The golden Chalice aspires to reveal water as the elixir of life. Both the platypus and Azure kingfisher are experiencing a decline in their population. These beautiful creatures rely on healthy waterways to survive. Without correct management of our water and with the strain of global warming, both species among others will be lost.
