The making of mosaic simultaneously connects me to the present moment as well as to millennia past. It enables me to be across time, as well lost in time. Fragments of stone and glass; found, broken and reassembled to speak to the importance of Gobekli Tepe, as well as to the global and universal connections that our lost civilizations made with the stars. Gobekli Tepe (belly shaped hill) is an archaeological site situated in southern Turkey dating from 10000BC. It is possibly the world’s first observatory. It consists of up to 22 of stone megalithic enclosures built and then buried by Neolithic communities to observe the rising of Sirius from the constellation Canis Major over a period of approximately 2000 years.

Caitlin Hepworth
Caitlin Hepworth is a Blue Mountains based artist working predominantly in contemporary sculptural mosaic. Her work is thematic, exploring narratives of regeneration, resilience, and transformation observed through environmental and psychological perspectives.
After her initial training in sculpture at NAS (2000) Caitlin led a fulfilling career in visual arts education in museums, galleries, and schools before turning her attention to the development of her sculptural mosaic practice.
‘As a young and slightly ignorant Art school graduate, I turned my nose up at mosaic art. Despite this I found myself in a local mosaic class with my mum. From the first time I cut a tesserae, I was completely hooked. The process of selecting, imprinting upon and arranging the material is key. When I realized I could combine the application of mosaic with sculptural forms I knew had found my mode of expression.’
Caitlin quickly realised that to learn deeply about the mosaic artform she needed to seek out learning opportunities overseas. She has undertaken every opportunity to extend her thorough knowledge of mosaic practice, travelling internationally to seek critique and instruction from both traditional and contemporary Mosaic Maestros in Spilimbergo Friuli, Ravenna, Sardinia, San Diego and Chicago.
Caitlin has been represented in numerous national and international exhibitions including the Waterhouse National Science Prize 2018 at the South Australian Museum and Sculpture at Scenic World 2018. She has been a three-time finalist in the Society of American Mosaic Artists - Mosaic Arts International, as well finalist in the Gallery of Contemporary Mosaics Chicago Stories we Tell. In 2018 Caitlin was a participant in the Third Symposium of Mosaic Art in Sardinia, Italy with Maestro Giulio Menossi and the 2018 recipient of the Society of American Mosaic Artists, Robin Brett Scholarship which enabled her to study with Maestro Verdiano Marzi at the Chicago Mosaic School in 2019.
