Death, the great equaliser. The fate that awaits all living creatures. One cannot cheat death, run or hide from its certainty. What becomes of one after death? Does one breath their last breath, to only enter a state of oblivion? Does one just cease to exist? Or perhaps death is only a physical end, where the spirit is severed from the corporeal body and exists afterlife, somewhere and somehow. Are the notions of heaven, purgatory, and even hell a reality or rather, are they a fabrication that aid acceptance when confronting one’s own demise. Throughout human history, each civilization has had its own version of an afterlife, which in many respects differ little in detail. Does this suggest that each belief is founded on a shred of truth. Perhaps, but one thing is for sure, until the reaper comes knocking on one’s own door, the mystery of death will remain just that, a mystery. Memento Mori, remember that you will die. Live life to its fullest and appreciate the small things, for they often make us the happiest.
A hauntingly beautiful legend, it is said to be bad luck to slay a swallow. Swallows are believed to carry the souls of the recently departed to the afterlife.
