Surrealism often captivates the young, cajoling imaginative minds into enigmatic worlds steeped in the unconscious . As an adolescent, I was greatly inspired by the bizarre, deeply symbolic, and dreamlike visions of surrealist artworks. My art as a teenager was Daliesque in design and revealed the inner most thoughts and feelings of a fledgling artist in the ignorance of her youth. With maturity built on time and experience, my artwork perceptibly changed, losing much of its surrealist qualities. It will be noted that I say much and not all has changed, as even now, it is obvious that many of my artworks still draw upon surrealist ideologies. Carnivale is, unquestionably a good example of this.
In an expanse where reality is ambiguous, life as we know it is upside down. In this dreamlike world fish, animals, and insects share the same space unrestricted by the limitations of their unique design. Fish appear to swim in the air and birds to fly underwater. The four seasons govern simultaneously, whilst coral and seaweed thrive among the growth of plants found on land. The individual purpose of each living creature is subverted, diminishing their importance to the world as a whole.
Carnivale is a painting that celebrates the resplendence of nature. In these extraordinary times when chaos appears to reign and life is overshadowed by uncertainty, it is more important than ever to cherish and take care of what really matters. Every living creature is vital to life on earth, and thus should be revered and protected. As inhabitants of this earth we need to act now and save our planet. It is frustrating that the pandemic has shifted all the focus away from climate change, for as much as corona virus is perilous to human lives, the risk that global warming poses to all life on earth is far greater. Without a healthy environment we cannot survive.
