Silver Lining | 2020

Adriana Seserko

60 cm diamater

Acrylic, UV resin, epoxy and synthetic clay on round birch panel

The glistening water droplets that laden the delicate blooms and foliage in Silver Lining may lead to the presumption that this painting depicts a blossoming garden after the rain. This impression would be logical but is also incorrect. What the viewer does not see is beyond the boundary of the garden, where the lush moist greenery unceremoniously ends and the scorched dry land reigns supreme. The water drops are not a result of the heavens opening up replenishing the earth and it’s inhabitants with the life giving elixir, but is due to the dedication of an individual and her hour long vigil with a hand held hose. With drought and increasing global temperatures that are symptomatic of Climate Change, the humble suburban garden is a silver lining. Not only does is effectively act as a sanctuary for wildlife, providing food, water, and shelter but too, works to cool our neighbourhoods down by as much as 10 degrees in the summer. Not a bad return when one too considers the pleasure that is derived from experiencing with all ones senses the beauty of a garden. It is the gift that keeps giving.
